Always in an iron skillet, fried chicken is a Sunday favorite and what Friday would be complete without fried catfish?
Growing up in a large family, dinnertime was a big deal. Denise recalls going to church on Sunday mornings and returning to a feast prepared by her aunt: “The food just magically appeared,” she joked. Lots of time, love, and patience went into those meals—as it does today.
Denise grew up in the Walnut Way neighborhood. Born in Milwaukee, she still has family living in the home on 17th were she resided as a little girl and still gathers today with her family. A “homestead house,” the 17th Street dwelling has been occupied by blood relatives for over 65 years, beginning with the migration in the 1930’s.
As it was back then, Denise and her family still enjoy gathering to enjoy their favorite dishes. It is a time to show off your masterpieces and enjoy the smiles on the faces of your guests. Sometimes it’s a time for the girls only. Every Valentine’s Day the women get together and celebrate their family and friendships. Next year Denise will be hosting the 25th anniversary of the ladies-only event.
While tradition is important, Denise is not afraid, and actually embraces stepping out of her comfort zone. She laughs as she recalls the Valentine’s Day when she and the ladies tried their hand at a Chinese dinner.
As Denise watches her children and grandchildren grow, she hopes to maintain the values she grew up with. She stresses the importance of extended family and enrichment that it brings. In the fast-paced society that we all live in, it is easy to forsake those values. Denise has made it one of her goals to make sure it lives on.
